Church Job Title: Director of Music Ministries:
This is a year-round part-time position.
The Music Director at John Wesley United Methodist Church will lead and develop the church’s music ministry. This includes planning, coordinating, and directing all music activities within the church to enhance one traditional and one contemporary worship service weekly and support the church’s mission.
General Requirements:
• The Director of Music Ministries will possess a strong Christian faith and understand he/she represents the JWUMC ministry in both work life and private life.
• The Director of Music Ministries will adhere to the policies and procedures of JWUMC including, but not limited to the responsibilities of this position
• The Director of Music Ministries will be subject to the Criminal Offense Record Investigation
(CORI)
Key Responsibilities:
1. Worship Planning and Leadership:
• Collaborate with the Pastor and Worship Ministry Team for worship services, special events, and church functions.
• Lead and direct the chancel choir, children’s choir and bells.
• Coordinate and lead weekly rehearsals.
• Attend the monthly Worship Ministry Team meeting in-person (preferred) or virtual using Zoom
• Provide musical leadership for all worship services, including Sundays, holidays, and special services (e.g., Christmas Eve, Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Easter)
2. Musical Development:
• Recruit, train, and mentor choir members, instrumentalists, and other volunteers involved in the music ministry.
• Encourage and develop new musical talent within the congregation.
• Foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all participants in the music ministry.
3. Administration and Coordination:
• Develop and manage the music ministry budget in coordination with the worship team leader and the church’s financial committee.
• Maintain the music library, instruments, and other equipment used by the music ministry.
• Coordinate with others to ensure smooth integration of music into other relevant church activities.
4. Personal and Professional Development:
• Stay current with trends in church music and worship practices.
• Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in music, Music Education, or 5 years of equivalent experience
Skills:
• Proficient in conducting choirs and leading congregational singing.
• Proficient in rehearsing the choirs while accompanying on the piano
• Proficient in Piano
• Ability to play the organ is highly desirable.
• Strong organizational, leadership and communication skills.
• Familiarity with a variety of musical styles and genres appropriate for worship.
Benefits:
• Four weeks paid vacation per year. Two weeks September-May and two weeks June-August
Work Hours:
No less than the 16-18 hours per week split between onsite and home preparation.
Current Schedule:
• All Sunday morning worship services (summer beach services at 7:30)
• Office hours and church meetings
• Children’s choir (No summer rehearsals)
• Chancel and Bell choir rehearsals (currently on Wednesday evenings no summer rehearsals)
• Preparation and rehearsal
• During Church Holy Days (Easter and Christmas) hours may vary.
